Choosing the right welding technique

How to choose the right welding technique?

Different criteria will define the type of weld you need to use. Here are some tips to help you choose the right process for your needs :

1. The coated electrode arc welding

When should I use it ?

This process is ideal for outdoor work or when conditions are not optimal, in petrochemical, nuclear, gas, oil, and everywhere in high-tech fields.

What materials ?

Coated electrode arc welding, is usable for many materials, such as steel, stainless steel, cast iron, etc.

Level of dexterity ?

Accuracy is moderate but dexterity is high. The coating must be removed.

2. MIG/MAG welding

When should I use it ?

MIG/MAG welding is ideal in production or high welding rates. It is used in most industries where the need to be productive becomes major. Or, when projects require to be very productive.

What materials ?

The MIG process is mainly used for aluminium and other metals that are sensitive to oxidation such as stainless steel.

MAG is recommended for steel, carbon and heavy metals.

Level of dexterity ?

This process results in relatively clean welds with little residue to clean.

3. TIG welding

When should I use it ?

TIG welding is preferred for projects where the thickness and nature of materials are important. This process is often used to obtain high quality welds on high value products, such as nuclear, space, etc.

What materials ?

Ideal for aluminium, stainless steel, titanium and non-ferrous materials.

Level of dexterity ?

The level of precision required is high, the welds are clean and aesthetic. The technique is demanding but slower.

4. Torch welding

When should I use it ?

This technique is mainly used for carbon or copper piping, repair, preheating and maintenance.

What materials ?

Torch welding is commonly used for welding copper, steel, etc. pipes and is a versatile process.

Level of dexterity ?

The accuracy is moderate. It is a convenient method for small part repairs or assembly.

The choice of process depends primarily on the type of project, the materials to be welded and the working environment.
